1907년. 버지니아 주. 안나 자이비스 라는 소녀 어머니를 여의다.
추모행사에서 소녀는 어머니가 좋아하던 꽃 카네이션을 사람들에게 나누어주었다.
안나 자이비스의 어머니 앤 자이비스는 사회운동가였다.
10명의 자식 중 8명을 남북전쟁에서 잃었던 그녀.
남북전쟁당시 중립을 선언하고 남북 양쪽의 부상병을 간호하였고
전쟁이 끝난 후에는 남북의 병사와 시민들을 초대,
서로의 불신과 적대감을 없애기 위해
'Mother's Friendship Day'를 개최하기도 했다.
세상의 모든 어머니들을 위해,
그리고 세상의 평화를 기원하며 만들어진 'Mother's Day'
그러나
군수자본과 떼어질 수 없는 정치가들은 전쟁에 반대할 수 없었기에
그 의미를 가족애로 한정시키고자 한다.
또, 비싼 가격에 판매되기 시작한 카네이션.
안나는 분노하여 'Mother's Day'를
폐지하고자 재판을 시작하지만
상업주의와 정치가들에게 패배하고 만다.
"누구에게나 엄마는 존재의 근원이다. 엄마라는 상징은 생명의 시작이며 베풂의 출발이기도 하다.
만약 엄마라는 상징이 죽는다면 이 세계도 함께 문을 닫을 것이다."
