NASA(미국항공우주국) 본부 & GEF(지구환경기금) 등 글로벌 기관 특별방문

우리 대학(총장 정승렬) 일반대학원 기후기술융합학과 및 산림자원학과 대학원생들과 임철희 교수(산림환경시스템학과)가 지난 12월 8일부터 12월 13일까지 미국 워싱턴D.C에 위치한 NASA(미국항공우주국) 본부(Headquarters)와 세계은행(World Bank)‧지구환경기금(GEF: Global Environment Facility)을 방문하여 인공위성 활용 연구와 기후변화 대응 기금의 역할 및 활용방안에 대해 토의하였다.
산사태 통합관리 전문인력 양성센터(센터장 이창배)의 글로벌 인사이트 프로그램으로 진행된 본 특별 방문에서는 NASA의 인공위성을 활용한 산사태 탐지 및 복원과 글로벌 기금을 통한 산림협력에 대해서 중점적으로 다루었다.
본 일정을 주관한 산림환경시스템학과 임철희 교수는 NASA의 LCLUC(토지피복 및 토지이용변화) Program의 협력기관으로 활동하고 있으며, NASA JPL(Jet Propulsion Laboratory)과 함께 인공위성을 활용한 토지이용변화 연구를 수행하고 있다.
이번 방문을 통해 산림환경시스템학과 연구진은 NASA의 동남아시아 연구 이니셔티브(SARI)에서 국민대학교의 역할을 확장하게 되었으며, 환경분야 국제기구 진출에 대한 학생들의 이해도를 높일 수 있었다.
임철희 교수는 “인공위성은 기후재난 모니터링, 탄소흡수원관리 등 기후변화 대응에서 중요한 역할을 하므로, 앞으로 NASA 연구팀과의 협력을 더욱 강화할 것이며, 글로벌 기금을 활용한 환경협력사업 또한 적극 확대해 나가겠다”라고 계획을 밝혔다.
올해부터 산림청으로부터 지정된 국민대학교의 산사태 통합관리 전문인력 양성센터는 참여 대학원생의 글로벌 역량 강화를 위해 지속적으로 글로벌 인사이트 프로그램을 추진할 계획이다.
