NASA 실리콘밸리 국제우주비행컴퍼런스 특별연구 교류 참여 / 데이비드 윌리엄 김(교양대학) 교수

한국우주인연구소(KIFA·Korea Institute for Astronauts)의 교양대학 데이비드 윌리엄 김(David William Kim) 교수는 영국 왕립역사학회(The Royal Historical Society, UK) 석학회원으로, 최근 미국 실리콘밸리에 위치한 NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute가 주관하는 ‘NASA Exploration Science Forum 2026’에 한국에서 유일하게 초청받아 특별 연구교류에 참여했다.
김 교수는 이번 방문을 통해 NASA Ames Research Center에서 Artemis II를 비롯해 향후 추진될 Artemis III·IV 유인 달 탐사 계획과 관련한 과학적 논의에 참여했다. 특히 Artemis II 임무의 주요 목표와 유인 달 탐사 활동이 향후 장기 우주탐사(Deep Space Exploration)에 미칠 영향 등을 주제로 NASA 관계자 및 연구진과 다양한 의견을 나눴다.
또한 Artemis II 우주비행사 중 한 명인 Victor Glover와 만나 유인 우주탐사 및 관련 과학연구의 발전 방향에 대한 의견을 교환했다. 이어 NASA Goddard Space Flight Center의 Lunar Science Lead인 Dr. Marie J. B. Henderson과는 2027~2028년 추진 예정인 Artemis III·IV 임무의 향후 비행 방향과 국제 공동연구 및 협력 가능성 등에 대해 논의했다.
한편, Dr. Henderson은 오는 2026년 10월 30일부터 11월 2일까지 나흘간 국민대학교에서 개최되는 ‘KIFA Spaceflight Conference 2026’에 참석할 예정이다. 이번 학술대회는 정부기관 중심의 우주개발 협력을 넘어 대학과 민간 연구기관 차원에서 미래 우주비행과 달 탐사, 국제 우주과학 협력의 가능성을 논의하는 학술교류의 장으로 마련된다.
KIFA는 이와 같은 국제적인 연구 및 학술교류를 기반으로 미래 유인 우주비행과 우주과학 분야의 글로벌 연구 네트워크를 확대해 나가고 있다. 현재 연구소에는 세계 각국의 교수와 연구원, 우주비행 및 관련 분야 전문가들이 참여하고 있다.
