7월의 호국인물 김종묵 소위

전쟁기념관은 30일 6ㆍ25전쟁 당시 강원 금성천 전투에서 큰 전공을 세우고 전사한 김종묵(1928~1953) 육군 소위를 ‘7월의 호국인물’로 선정했다.
1950년 국민대를 졸업하고 52년 7월 갑종 23기로 임관한 김 소위는 53년 7월 13일 제6사단 19연대 1중대1소대장으로 있다 중공군 제67군 20사단의 대공세에 맞서 금성 남쪽 407고지를 방어했다. 적군의 집중포화로 통신이 두절된 상황에서 김 소위는 2개 중대 규모의 중공군을 유인해 총검으로 백병전을 치르던 중 왼쪽 어깨에 관통상을 당하고도 퇴각하는 적을 끝까지 추격하다 장시간 과다출혈로 전사했다.
김 소위의 불굴의 정신에 힘입어 당시 금성천 전투에서 한국군은 256명 전사에 적군 2,400명 사살이라는 전적을 거두었다. 정부는 그의 전공을 기려 을지무공훈장을 추서했다.
