무인차량연구실, 미래자동차 기술공모전 ‘자율주행자동차 경진대회’서 준우승

현대자동차그룹이 주관하는 제12회 미래자동차 기술공모전인 ‘자율주행자동차 경진대회’에서 국민대학교 무인차량연구실(KUL)이 준우승을 차지했다.
이번 대회는 2013년 5월 개최공고 이후 518일의 준비기간을 거쳐 지난 10월 1일부터 2일까지 교통안전공단 자동차안전연구원(유비쿼터스 시험로)에서 개최됐다. 1995년부터 시작된 공모전은 초기 ‘미래자동차 기술공모전’으로 시작되어 10회에 이르러 ‘자율주행자동차경진대회(Autonomous Vehicle Competition)’라는 부제로 양산자동차 기반의 자율주행자동차 경진대회로 변경됐다. 12회 대회는 총 2.5km의 주행코스에서 실제 도로상황과 유사한 교차로, 안개구간, 선행차량 추종, 낙하물인지/정차 등 9개의 과제를 수행하도록 구성됐다. 특히, 이번 대회는 이전까지 사용한 고가의 GPS 대신 30만 원대의 저렴한 GPS 기반으로 제한돼 그 난이도가 상승했다.
국민대, 서울대, 한양대 등 총 12개의 국내 대학팀이 출전한 이번 대회는 주행기록과 미션의 성공 및 실패로 순위가 결정됐고 우승팀에는 일억 원, 준우승팀에는 오천만 원 등 총상금 이억 일천만 원의 상금이 걸린 대회였다.
