미국지구물리학회에서 ‘기후변화와 생태계 서비스’ 주제로 특별세션 개최 / 임철희(교양대학) 교수

미국지구물리학회(American Geophysical Uniron)의 대표적 연례 학술행사인 Fall Meeting이 지난 2022년 12월 12-16일 동안 미국 시카고 매코믹플레이스(McCormick Place)에서 “Science Leads the Future”를 주제로 개최되었다. 미국지구물리학회는 자연과학·사회과학 등 지구환경 분야 전 세계 학자들이 매년 2~3만 명 참석하는 세계적 학술행사이다.
지난 Fall Meeting에서 우리 대학 교양대학의 임철희 교수가 ‘기후변화와 생태계 서비스(Ecosystem Services in the Era of Climate Change: Carbon Neutrality, Resilient Pathways, and Future Policy)’를 주제로 국내 연구진으로는 유일하게 특별세션을 개최하였다. 국민대학교를 중심으로 한스자이델재단, 고려대학교, 국립산림과학원, 국가녹색기술연구소 연구진이 공동주최하였다.
이번 특별세션에서는 캘리포니아주립대학교, 미항공우주국(NASA), 스미소니언연구소, 에딘버러대학교 등 전 세계에서 21명의 연사가 참여하였으며, 기후변화와 생태계 서비스에 대한 폭넓은 발표와 토의가 진행되었다. 임철희 교수 연구팀에서는 인도네시아 이탄지 복원을 통한 기후변화 대응(산림청 지원), 한반도 기후기술협력 방안(과기부 지원) 등의 주제발표를 통해 국민대학교의 연구성과를 공유하였다.
이번 특별세션을 통해 탄소중립, 기후변화 적응 등을 위한 자연기반해법의 역할에 대해 전 세계 학자들의 공감대를 형성하였으며, 생태계 서비스를 중심으로 한 기후변화 연구네트워크 강화에 기여할 것으로 평가되고 있다. 특히 국민대학교의 한반도미래연구원 기후위기센터 및 탄소중립녹색성장연구센터 설립과 활동을 알리는 데 많은 역할을 했다.
