꼴, 좋다!_자연에서 배우는 디자인 / 박종서(공업디자인학과) 교수 지음

청어 가시에서 구조의 디자인을 발견하고, 마디 별로 따로 움직이는 게 다리에서 굴삭기의 미래를 점쳐본다. 현대자동차 디자인연구소 부사장을 지낸 박종서 국민대 교수는 "몇십년 동안 자동차를 디자인했지만, 위대한 자연의 디자인 앞에서는 점점 초라해진다"고 말한다. 인간이 만든 어떤 혁신적인 구조물도 알고보면 이미 자연 속에 존재하고 있는 디자인이라는 것이다.
그는 40여 편의 짤막한 에세이를 모은 이 책을 통해 풍뎅이 등짝, 소금쟁이 발자국, 백합 씨앗, 달개비꽃 등 우리 주위의 자연이 지니고 있는 놀라운 디자인 감각들을 일깨운다. 영국의 유명 식물원인 에덴 프로젝트를 덮고 있는 투명 구조물과 곤충의 겹눈 구조를 연결시키고, 갈대를 끼워 만든 조그마한 배를 통해 이 시대 모든 선박 디자인의 핵심을 짚어낸다. 물결따라 너울대는 가오리의 모습과 나사(NASA)가 개발 중인 형태 변형 비행기의 사진을 나란히 놓고 비교한다. 풍성하게 실린 사진들로 눈이 즐겁다.
