만드는 사람에게도 몸살을 앓게 했던 ‘몸살을 약속하다’

2001년 커다랗고 볼품없는 화강암 하나가 우리학교에 들어왔다. 그후 3년, 그 돌덩이는 예술작품이 되어 예술관 앞에 자리 잡게 되었다.
전 학년에게 유난히도 오래 걸리고 힘이 든 작품이라 기억되고 있는 ‘몸살을 약속하다’.
01년 학생들 간의 공모전의 결과 김시천(입체.01학번)군의 도안이 당선되고 시작된 공동작업. 돌을 깎아 내는 것은 상상을 초월할 정도로 많은 시간과 노력이 필요했다. 도안을 그렸던 학우는 군대에 입대했지만 그 돌덩이는 그의 후배들에게 또 그의 후배들에게 이어져 03년이 되어서야 완성되었다. 조형물을 만들어 내기까지 20명씩 3년간, 최소한 120개의 손을 거쳤다.
4면에 눈.코.귀.혀가 각각 새겨져 오감을 나타내는 이 조형물, 마지막을 장식했던 03학번은 무슨 의미를 가진 것인지 모르고 작업을 하게 되었지만 이 공동작업은 입체미술과 학생을 하나로 묶어주는 의미 있는 것이었다.
